Barthes theory of reading a text on more than one way

Barthes

Barthe says there is more than one way to read a text. The text is a collection of ideas, it depends on how the individual reads/perceives it.
Texts can be either open or closed. If the text is open it has lots of different meanings but if it’s closed it only has one meaning.

For example our media text (thriller) according to Barthe is an open text.

One way our text can be perceived is by viewing it as a nightmare, the text begins in black and white and the actress getting chased by the killer. This creates a very dark and in a way a night time feeling. You could easily see this part as her being in a nightmare, the actress is scared and the heart beat over the text is playing with every fade in and out to black. Also what adds to the effect is when she walks into the bathroom still half asleep and it’s dark outside (Seen through the bathroom window) when the door reopens its day time. Suggesting she has fully awakened from the nightmare and a more light hearted feeling surrounds the text.

Also we can see the text from the killers perspective not just the main character. The audience is taken into the world of the killer as it switches roles when she leaves the house. The audience can now read the text as being an observation viewing on the victim. The roles have switched and the audience can also feel at ease because they are no longer in the perspective of the killer. They almost feel as if they have control.

Research of Similar Artist

Nickleback Far Away -
It is a classic love song but has all the negatives you may associate with big, syrupy love songs. If not a little mushy. The song contains gentle, chiming guitars and words designed to touch the audience. Evidence for the amount of people it’s moved- It’s youtube view count is 29,598,396.

In this album art you can see that they've manipualted the image to make it look like the tears from the eye are made of metal. They've used a texture in the background which also matches the outline of the face. Also in a way similar to my album art they have used an outer glow. Also like I overlayed my picture of the band they've done the same with the eye so it picks up partly some of the texture in the background.

Target Audience -

In a way Chad Kroeger knows exactly what his audience want, He released an extremely racy album that's full of songs about getting drunk and doing it all without breaking any taboos, but with enough love on the side with a few songs to slip his way into mainstream audiences. Once again using the example of how many views his videos have:

Far Away - 29,598,396
Rockstar - 30,649,250
Burn It To The Ground - 11,110,268
Someday - 8,273,724
How You Remind Me - 8,449,223

So obviously Nicklebacks audience is showing huge support for their music and it's a huge indication to keep producing music in the same way. They've tapped into a secure fan base which will always listen to thier music.

How is representation addressed in your Media Product?

How is representation addressed in your Media Product?

The use of gender representation in our music video is promoted by a female main actress. The actress is a typical teenager and this is shown by the very first opening scenes, where she has to get up in the morning with a messy bedroom. Teenagers are known for messy, untidy rooms. Also she is betrayed as being a vulnerable character and we see this in the black and white scene of her running away from the opposed killer at the very beginning. Black and white contrasts a mystery feel which only adds more vulnerability to the character. It adds a new dimension of almost a cold and dark feeling and often symbolises something from the past. So already the audience have a representation of time.

We see her getting up in the normal fashion, going downstairs and having breakfast, the radio is on with an announcement playing about a killer on the loose looking for teenage girls, this also adds to the vulnerability of the character. The representation of the character in a way is slightly stereotypical towards woman in a way that they are vulnerable and weak, this is because when she wakes up in the morning she’s all alone and certain camera angles show in a way that she could be being watched by someone outside. Also even though the killer is never seen he is however given a portrayal of a stereotypical male killer because of the radio announcement.

To address the representation of gender we asked the actress just to dress in everyday casual clothes, this way it helps to identify that she is female if you can’t already decide. However if we dressed the female in a suit and tie it would take the audience longer to recognise the gender and they would have to wait for a close up shot. Also the types of clothes she is wearing can reflect her age, wearing casual teenage clothes like jeans and hoodys gives the audience a head start on guessing her age, if we dressed her in knitted clothes however, trying not to be to stereotypical, you could argue that she would look slightly older. An example of this is the use of glasses in films, often you can see them on females, wearing smart clothes whilst giving off a rather intelligent look however the character could be no more than a form of entertainment. In essence the clothing that is worn can represent what the character is like in the form of media and how old they are.

The representation of gender in our media product can be seen as a stereotype. However in modern day society it’s not often that killers are caught and named as females. Age however is represented with the best of truth seeing as the actress was in her own environment. She is then able to act with ease and show her real self so the audience can get a good feel for how old she is.
